I should have known better. I should have known when I saw that the gauge was off; I should have known when I thought the body looked awfully small. But I was living in denial because I wanted to make the Baby Kimono for Clover now . This morning I was nearing the end of the second skein of yarn and was fairly close to being finished with the sweater when I decided I simply must know for sure.
I probably should just end this post right here so you won't know just how weird I can be, but I won't. I'll tell you what I did next.
I took a little trip to the store and purchased a life size baby doll. Yep, I did. I justified my purchase with the fact that I can use this doll to model the rest of the baby items I make since it is "life size", but really I just needed to know for sure about this particular sweater. I'm guessing this doll is the size of a baby about 2 or 3 months old - it's 23 1/2 inches long. I figured a newborn size would fit tightly on this doll. The baby kimono won't even come close to fitting this baby doll at all!
Rip-it, rip-it; it's off to the frog pond.
Samm really liked this yarn (and so did I) so I went to The Yarn Sellar and picked up a couple more skeins and I've decided to make the Knitting Pure and Simple Baby Tunic instead. It calls for yarn with the exact gauge I was getting. Hopefully, I'll have better luck with this!
What a drag. At least you don't have to gauge swatch for the next go-round!

Ohh -- good luck with that! Gauge is fickle. Mine seems to keep changing. It's like that old saying -- some days you get the bear, some days the bear gets you.

Um...I was feeling kind of guilty over my most recent shoe-buying spree. But now I'm thinking, "At least I didn't buy a baby doll..."
On the plus side, the best thing about going to visit Grammy was that she always had cool toys for me to play with. Now you know you'll have a doll for the grandbaby!

Just what I was thinking! You have your own fit model for Clover's clothes, then when she grows out of them she can use them on her dolly! :)

Better that you figured it out now instead after Clover was born. Not only is gauge fickle it lies too! Great idea for the "model" btw.

You think that's weird? I call it 'genius'! and yes, the big plus to that is Clover will have a baby doll to play with...with it's own wardrobe!
Seriously! How cool are you!?!?!?!? VERY!
Good knitting on the Baby Tunic!

Too bad! But at least it was only a small sweater!

Can't wait to see the pics of the new tunic. I love the Plain and Simple patterns. They're so easy to knit and classic. What yarn are you using?

Oh No! I hate it when that happens .. been there, done that. (must be why I choose to knit socks)

No Way! Darn...I'm sorry to hear that - although I do like the new pattern...
Later...off to post some shots of the boat trip - some of the Summer cottages...you'll appreciate them...

Actually, I think a baby model form is a great idea! And now you know, and aren't giving a gift that's too small. Happy knitting!
