While reading Facebook yesterday, I followed a link to a story that anyone who goes to the beach should read. This story has a very happy ending thankfully, but it could have ended so very differently. Please take a couple of minutes and read it.
Sorry to my Facebook friends for the double post, but I think this is too important not to post both in places!
Thank you for pointing me to this story. Innocently dug simple holes at the beach can be so dangerous indeed.

I did read it and thought that this Mom has the right idea; to celebrate an additional birthday. He was so lucky. Another must read is Drowning Doesn't Look Like Drowning.

Wow, wow, wow, wow, and WOW. Thank you for this. Who knew?? And imagine that person having the instinct (?) to check that depression in the sand? Unbelievable!

Julie, this is very important information. There was a story very similar to this in the NY Times about a boy who was lying on his stomach and digging and the hole collapsed on his head. We spend a lot of time at the beach and the lifeguards have the same rule of no deeper than your knee...and for good reason.

It's funny, but I never, ever would have thought of that as being a danger. But it does make a lot of sense when I think about it. How scary for that poor little guy!
